We meet Albert Boadella, one of Spain's most important theatre directors

Albert Boadella spoke to MUF about his role as artistic director of the Teatros del Canal.

Not always in agreement with the choices, Boadella is in charge of putting together the programme for the Teatros del Canal on behalf of the different performance companies. When deciding, he takes into account what the public want to see and tries to offer a variety of productions- opera, theatre, dance, zarzuela etc...

The Teatro del Canal theatres are financed by the Council for Culture and the Communidad de Madrid though some companies will have their own sponsors. “In the future”, says Boadella, “there will be a need for more private funding as government money is going to be withdrawn and theatres will have to move towards methods of private funding like in the USA or UK.”

For tourists, he recommends the dance festival (Madrid en Danza), taking place in November. Also there are other international names coming such as the Prague Ballet and Tango Metropolis.

As of Janaury 21, the Teatros del Canal will show his own production, “Amadeu”, a Zarzuela, written and directed by Boadella, with music by Amadeo Vives (1871-1932).
