Monday 2nd May is a holiday in Madrid, however most big shops around Sol and Gran Vía and cafés, bars and restaurants will open as per usual. Public transport too will be running, but not quite as frequently as a normal day.
Note that the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia museums will not open on Sunday 1st May. Also the Prado and Thyssen don't open on Mondays, so will be closed on the holiday Monday.
