JMJ World Youth Day and Pope's visit to Madrid

World Youth Day 16-21 August in Madrid

Young people from all over the world will be coming to Madrid to take part in World Youth Day, an international mass gathering for young catholics, which coincides with the Pope's visit. There could be around 1/2 million extra people on the streets of Madrid.

Pope Benedict XVI arrives in Madrid on Thursday, August 18.

Note that during the visit, Plaza de España-Gran Vía- Alcalá and Paso de Recoletos, Cibeles and Paseo del Prado will be fully closed to traffic from 16th-23rd and there will be other disruption and closures along these routes from 11th August due to preparation for the event. There will also be road closures around the Asturias/La Latina areas of the city Thurs-Fri18/19 August, on Saturday 20th around the cathedral area, and the weeekend 20/21 August the area around the Cuatro Vientos airdrome (SW of the city) will be inaccessible. Expect diversions on buses and Banco de España, Colón, Recoletos and Cuatro Vientos stations may be subject to closures.
