The Jozami Collection at the Lazaro Galdiano Museum

http://www.flg.es/your-visit-to-the-museo-lazaro-galdiano

Exhibition: BETWEEN TIMES...

PRESENCES OF THE JOZAMI COLLECTION AT THE LAZARO GALDIANO MUSEUM

Curator: Diana B. Wechsler

OPENING: February 13, 2014

Venue: Lazaro Galdiano Museum
Serrano 122 Madrid

February 13 through May 12, 2014

The Lazaro Galdiano museum on Serrano is one of Madrid´s best kept secrets.

Once the private home of José Lázaro Galdiano (1862-1947) Spanish financier, journalist, publisher and art collector, who at the time of his death owned one of the largest and most significant art collections in Spain. Described in 1940 as "one of the greatest patrons of culture in nineteenth century Spain".

The building itself or palace is one of the few left in the Barrio Salamanca in Madrid, many of which have been torn down to make way for high rises. The corner of Serrano and Maria de Molina is where you can still find these original "palace homes". The Lazaro Galiano museum maintains its structure both inside and out. Across the street, the IE Business school, have kept most of the outside structure, but the insides have been butchered.

BETWEEN TIMES... PRESENCES OF THE JOZAMI COLLECTION AT THE LAZARO GALDIANO MUSEUM

The Jozami Collection consists in a vast selection of works of modern and contemporary art by artists from Argentina, other Latin American countries, and other places around the world. Initiated more than 35 years ago by Aníbal Yazbeck Jozami, it has grown in recent years with additional contributions by his wife Marlise Ilhesca. It is a collection that has taken shape through desire and passion and it is consolidated with every new acquisition as a markedly international aggregate of global aspirations coexisting with local tensions. Centering on diversity, it represents the perspectives of a contemporary humanism.

Between Times... is an exhibition produced of a selection of works of the Jozami Collection that comprises two main sections: Presences of the Jozami Collection at the MLG and Figuration and its Limits.

In Presences... each piece correlates-by adhesion or dissent-to the conditions of production and interpretation of its time. However, it is also interpreted from the present and with the interpretive conditions that this entails. With these considerations in mind, the pieces of the Jozami Collection, chosen for their pertinence to each one of the narrative themes in the halls of the Lazaro Galdiano Collection, are presented with an aim to activate the senses and convert the show into a thought-provoking space.

Intervention, convergence, analogy, quotation and parody are among the situations sought/provoked/evoked from this international contemporary art show featuring the Jozami Collection. It is an invitation to revisit the Lazaro Galdiano Museum with attention to the signals, interferences, and dialogues...in short, the presence of the pieces of the collection of this South American couple within the historical-artistic narrative of the showrooms in this Spanish museum.

Figuration and its Limits, the other section of Between Times... arises from the assumption that the arts offer other means of accessing the real and that we can progress with regard to some of the forms that these realities take on. This selection of works of the Jozami Collection offers an overview of the modern and contemporary figurations in the works from a series of artists from the Southern Cone, brought together through different micro-stories: that of the critical figurations (Lacámera, Vigo, Berni, Muniz, Schvarz, Espina, Sacco) and their metaphysical and surreal drifts (Batlle Planas, Forner, Xul Solar, Ducmelic, Aizenberg), that of the representations of space and landscape as marks of belonging (Sívori, Malharro, Figari, Quinquela Martín, Noé, Kuitca, Liliana Porter) and that of modern-style figurations on the frontiers of abstraction (Torres García, Gurvich, Pailós, Seoane, Hlito).

Ara Malikian Performed Live From The Cortefiel Shop Window

Photos (copyleft) for Cortefiel by Jose Antonio Rojo  http://www.rojofoto.es

Violinist Ara Malikian spearheads “Talented People” initiative

http://gentecontalento.cortefiel.com/

The concert was video streamed today on social networking sites for fans of the brand and broadcast on a giant outdoor screen for the general public.

For one morning, the window of Cortefiel’s Gran Via store came to life as a stage for the famous Lebanese violinist, Ara Malikian. He will perform a repertoire of his favourite music to launch Cortefiels’ “Talented People”"Gente con Talento" initiative. Malikian is the star of this new campaign, just as chef Mario Sandoval and mountaineer and children’s storybook writer Araceli were for “Courageous People”.

“Talented People” is a Cortefiel initiative whereby they collaborate with role models with something to say. Cortefiel wants to democratise fashion, by telling stories with which everyday people can identify. Here, fashion and violin music come together to do just this.

Malikian believes that clothing, like music, “is a way of expressing our personalities. Our differences are what make us special, nobody has the right to criticise anyone”. And so, when speaking of the “Talented People” campaign, he says that “we all have talent, each in our own way, and it’s up to us what we do with it”.

Malikian is not alone in this mission. He is joined by other talented luminaries such as dancer Eva Yerbabuena, winner of the National Dance Prize; fado singers Rodrigo Costa Félix and Marta Pereira; journalist Verónica Durán, president of Fusionarte and champion of the 100 latinos project in Madrid; the science writer Sonia Fernández-Vidal, author of the book Quantic Love; Daniel Vicente, ranked seventh in the woodcarving world championships; wine expert Meritxel Falgueras, Promising Young Golden Nose of Cataluña; José Luis Serzo, the multidisciplinary artist who combines painting, sculpture, photography and literature, among other media; and the Spanish canoeist Saúl Craviotto, gold medallist in Beijing and silver medallist in London.

Cortefiel is reinventing itself with this campaign, seeking inspiration from people who choose clothes that reflect their personality and make them feel good rather than being slaves to fashion. People who strive to be better, who constantly push themselves because they know that talent without hard work is worthless. People who, above all, love what they do.
These are the faces of the new era for Cortefiel – itself a brand steeped in history and with a rich narrative. Part of Grupo Cortefiel, Cortefiel is a leader in the fashion sector with 380 outlets in 23 countries and more than 1900 retail stores. It also has a presence in a further 65 countries through its main chains: Cortefiel, Pedro del Hierro, Springfield and women’secret.

About the artist
Ara Malikian is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and passionate violinists of his generation. Born in Lebanon to an Armenian family, he began playing the violin at a very early age, taught by his father. He gave his first concert at 12 and at 15 received a grant by the German Government (DAAD) to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover. He then continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, whilst also being taught by some of the most respected teachers in the world such as Franco Gulli, Ruggiero Ricci, Ivri Gitlis, Herman Krebbers and members of the Alban Berg Quartet. His relentless passion for music and humanity led Ara Malikian to immerse himself in his Armenian roots and assimilate music from a variety of different cultures from around the world - the Middle East (Arab and Jewish); Central Europe (gypsy and kletzmer), Argentina (tango) and Spain (flamenco) – to create a unique sound which blends their rhythmic and emotional power with the fluidity and finesse of the great classical European tradition. www.aramalikian.com

The Tate in London brings an English touch to the CaixaForum

-->If you are a rebellious type then artist William Blake could be your poster boy. The painter, poet, engraver and creator of new techniques expressed great political and social events in his work. While he was misunderstood back in his day, he's now a part of art history.

Some of that history is now on show in Madrid thanks to the Tate Britain and La Caixa Foundation. The exhibition “William Blake (1757 – 1827) Visions in British Art” at the CaixaForum looks at the artist and his influence on art. There are more than one hundred works to take in, 30 of which are from artists who were influenced by his style. What makes this a big deal, is that it's the first exhibition on William Blake to be organised in Spain since the mid-nineties.

The exhibition is now on and will run until October 21. It's at the CaixaForum Madrid on Paseo del Prado, 36. See Madrid Is User Friendly website for more information on the CaixaForum.

If you want to see what his work is all about check out this video below.

Step back in time with the Clásicos en Verano festival

Music dating back to the 13th century will be played out across Madrid from next month.

It's all part of the Clásicos en Verano festival presented by the Communidad de Madrid. Over 300 musicians will play across 50 council areas across the city in just over 80 concerts.

For a festival that's been around for 25 years, don't expect the line up to be outdated. There are 48 premieres on show, including national acts Trío Arbós and el Cuarteto Ercolani.

If you're on a budget, this festival gets even better. Most of the performances are free and for the ones that aren't, they won't break the budget. The cheapest ticket starts at €3, with the most expensive reaching €18.

If you want to see what is playing in your area and when check out this link: http://www.madrid.org/clasicosenverano/2012/municipios.html
